Monday marked the first day of classes for the fall 2022 semester, which meant campus was filled with Tar Heels making their way to classes, the library, dining halls and other spots.

Nearly 8,000 new students join thousands of Tar Heels this school year. The new Tar Heels include more than 4,450 first-year students, nearly 940 transfer students and more than 2,500 graduate students.

The incoming undergraduate students come from 95 North Carolina counties and 48 states and represent 85 countries. About 18 percent of incoming students are the first in their families to attend college.

The Old Well was the place to be on Monday as students waited in line to take a sip of water. Legend says that a sip from the Old Well on the first day of classes will result in good grades or even straight A’s.

In his speech at New Student Convocation on Sunday evening, Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz said the Old Well represents the University’s history and the ties that bind the community. “We participate in this tradition because we can’t succeed alone. We need each other.”
