Spring break is somehow already upon us, and that means one thing: time to relax, travel, and make memories! However, as students explore new environments we must remind them to take proactive steps to stay safe, especially when alcohol may be involved. Preparing for emergencies by creating a personal safety plan can make all the difference in ensuring a fun and secure break. Below are a few tips to share with your students to be prepared in the case of an emergency.
- Create Emergency Contacts: Save important numbers into your phone, notably local emergency services, your hotel, and a trusted friend.
- Do your Research: If traveling somewhere new, look beyond the best restaurants and tourist spots—get familiar with safe and less-safe neighborhoods, local laws, and in some cases cultural norms.
- Stick with Friends: Make sure you are always with a friend and never leave anyone behind.
- Pace Yourself: If consuming alcohol, drink responsibly, stay hydrated, and make sure to eat.
- Watch Your Drink: Never leave your drink unattended or accept one from someone you don’t know.
- Plan Your Transportation: Arrange for a safe ride home in advance, whether it’s a designated driver or public transportation.
- Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, remove yourself from the situation and seek help if needed.
As a student myself, creating a safety plan was the most beneficial thing when I have travelled on my own or with friends. A little preparation goes a long way in making sure your Tar Heels’ spring break remains a time of fun, relaxation, and great memories!
