Students at the forefront to change the tradition of LDOC at UNC

Posted about 6 years ago  in Carolina Family NewsStudent LifeSafety & WellnessStudent Support.

At UNC, LDOC stands for the Last Day of Class. Over time, it has grown into a tradition of celebrating the end of the academic year. LDOC has been known across campus and the community to be a day when many students celebrate by drinking, but many students want something different.

UNC students have partnered with the Division of Student Affairs for four years now, working to coordinate a variety of substance-free ways to celebrate and make the day memorable, whether it’s students’ first or last LDOC at UNC.

In addition to CUAB Pit Events each year, student groups have in the past few years coordinated events like a music festival, late night breakfast and DJ, or relaxing on the quad with yard games.

This year, students can celebrate with CUAB’s Pit Events, NPHC+GAC Cook Out at Rams, Campus Rec on the Polk Place Lawn, and RHA’s game night in the Union between a free showing of Avengers: Infinity Wars in the Great Hall and the premier of Avengers: Endgame at Varsity theater on Franklin.

We know students have the power to change perceptions around drinking norms and reduce high-risk drinking. Just last year, only 32% of a UNC students reported that they participated in binge drinking. And, 82% of students reported using harm reduction strategies like eating before or while drinking. Last year, over 70% of students surveyed on LDOC asked for more places to just hang out on campus, and nearly 50% said the best part of LDOC is free food. That’s why student groups and the Division of Student Affairs are proud to support these events this year, focused on healthy choices.

The Division of Student Affairs is working hard to provide safer alternatives for students to reduce risks associated with high-risk alcohol use. Help us spread the word to students and reinforce a culture of safe celebration. Holding classes on LDOC helps reinforce the campus culture of academic integrity and health and safety for all.
